H’Sao Plus, school residency! Sat, Jan 21, 6:30pm • Sun Valley Opera House • $20 / $30 nonmember / $10 student
H’sao’s journey begins in the band members’ native Chad. The group was initially made up of the Rimtobaye brothers and their sister: Caleb, Mossbass, Taroum, and Israel. They began singing in the church where their father was the pastor. As they began performing publicly in the mid-1990s, they added Charles and Service Ledjebgue, and the group was able to buy instruments with their earnings. Their initial lack of means forced H’Sao to develop an original and unique style of a cappella songs. Now they mix their large repertoire of a cappella songs with numbers that include keyboards, djembe, drums, guitar, bass . . . and African dance. H’Sao draws inspiration from gospel and traditional African music, especially that of its Chadian roots, and adds dashes of pop, soul, jazz and R&B. The voices are magnificent, true and powerful; their original compositions, their unmistakable style and the energy on stage are contagious. H’Sao has filled concert halls in Sweden, Ireland, the United States, Colombia, Canada, South Africa, and Australia with vibrant African rhythms and hopeful words. See YouTube videos

Moira Smiley + VOCO Plus, school residency! Fri, Nov 11, 6:30pm • Sun Valley Opera House
Moira Smiley + VOCO is a visionary blend of female voices that redefines harmony singing with the power and physicality of folksong, the avant-garde fearlessness of Béla Bartók and the delicious, vaudevillian accompaniment of cello, banjo, accordion and body percussion. The group is known for its original improvisation-built songs steeped in Appalachian and Eastern European traditions. Named #1 a cappella group in the United States in 2007, VOCO embodies the energy of street singing and the elegance of a string quartet. VOCO is sweet, hard-driving Americana mixed with eastern European dance and dissonance. It's all rounded out with body-stompin' percussive movement and joyous, magnificent, hair-raising harmonies—music that mourns and dances at the same time.
You may know the name, you likely know the voice, but you have not seen a show like the troubadour-style solo performance by Scottish-born, Australian-raised, California-dwelling, Men at Work frontman, Colin Hay. Michael Franti is the creator and lead singer of Michael Franti & Spearhead. For over two decades, The Bay Area born Franti has been bringing our world exceptionally powerful, deeply felt music. His latest release, The Sound of Sunshine, is a kind of musical sun shower, a bright, beautiful and often buoyant song cycle created to bring all kinds of listeners a sense of hope during rough and rainy times. The album marked the highest chart debut of Franti’s career on the Billboard Top 200 and continues to find success on the charts with singles “The Sound of Sunshine”, “Hey Hey Hey” and his latest release “I’ll Be Waiting”. Franti’s impressive series of recordings have vividly reflected his status as a musical citizen of the world as he continues to bring his unique sound and inspiring message to fans everywhere.
“To play for people and share your songs with them is to make a real connection,” says Franti. “And as a musician I was on tour with put it recently, ‘Our fans didn’t come to us from a reality show. They came to us from reality.’ And so, we mean something in their lives. We’re the music they put on when they drive their little kids to school, or hang out with the person they love at night. So they have an investment in the music. And that means so much because this music is very personal to me too.”
“Known for mixing rock, rap, reggae, soul and other styles into a musical gumbo all his own, Franti delivers songs that will force the listener to stand up and ‘Shake It’” – Associated Press
Rickie Lee Jones Tuesday, August 2 • River Run Lodge Visit her website
Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist in 1980, Rickie Lee Jones has spent her career challenging her listeners and the establishment with an absorbing musical vision that defies border and classification. She rocked the culture of singer-song writerdom with her refusal to conform to the staid and careful eloquence of the folk rock generation that came before her. Neither punk nor pop, she wove a thread of her own devising, jazz - the old musical kind, and R&B - the Motown thread that permeates her work.
The Avett Brothers (pronounced eh-vitt) is a folk rock band from Concord, North Carolina. The band is made up of two brothers, Scott Avett and Seth Avett, who play the banjo and guitar respectively, and Bob Crawford who plays the stand-up bass, Joe Kwon, cello, and Jacob Edwards, drums. The Avett Brothers combine bluegrass, country, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, honky tonk, and ragtime to produce a sound described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having the "heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones."
Signed by legendary producer Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and the Dixie Chicks to name a few) in 2008, the Avett Brothers’ 2009 release I and Love and You reached #16 on Billboards’ chart of bestselling albums. Known for their rowdy, infectious live performances, the Avett Brothers’ concert coincides with Sun Valley’s hosting of the National Mountain Bike Championships.
Sweet Plantain Friday, March 4, 6:30pm • Sun Valley Opera House, Sun Valley
Back for an encore performance in the Wood River Valley, last season’s audience favorite, Sweet Plantain, is a string quartet that specializes in genre-blurring, original compositions and arrangements as well as contemporary works by Latin American composers. Its unique style fuses Latin, classical, jazz and improvisational forms. The group’s mission is to give voice to a contemporary, urban, Latino sound, and much of the group’s repertoire is rooted in improvisation. The art of improvisation, once an integral part of western classical music, has all but been abandoned in the training of classical artists, although it occupies an important role in nearly every other musical genre. Sweet Plantain works to weave the possibilities of improvisation into classical music by arranging existing pieces and writing original compositions that contain improvised sections. The group also makes use of extended percussive techniques; some of them original creations, to best achieve and showcase the rhythmic vitality characteristic of Latin music. Hear Sweet Plantain
Residency Sweet Plantain was not just a hit last year in concert—the group made a profound impact on local students. We’ve never seen so many kids so fired up to discuss music with our visiting performers. This year, Sweet Plantain is sending music to the schools for students to practice before the band members come to work in the classroom. That will be a part of the evening’s live performance, giving our local students the very rare opportunity to perform with professional musicians in a concert setting

CAROLE KING JAMES TAYLOR TROUBADOUR REUNION TOUR Special Date Added in Sun Valley, Idaho - SOLD OUT Performance to Benefit Sun Valley Center and Alliance for the Wild Rockies Monday, July 12, 7:30pm River Run Lodge, Ketchum
A special performance has been added to the Carole King and James Taylor Troubadour Reunion tour at 7:30 pm on July 12, 2010 at River Run in Sun Valley, benefitting The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and the Alliance for the Wild Rockies.
The genesis of this once-in-a-lifetime reunion tour were 6 performances by King and Taylor in 2007 celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Los Angeles’ famed Troubadour nightclub. At that club some 40 years ago, Taylor urged King to emerge as an artist from behind her piano, a seminal moment in the history of these Pop Singer-Songwriter icons.
An ardent advocate for educational and environmental issues, King, a long-time resident of Idaho’s Sawtooth Valley, selected The Sun Valley Center for the Arts, a non-profit educational arts organization whose mission is to stimulate and provoke the imagination through excellence in diverse arts programs; and the Alliance for the Wild Rockies, a volunteer organization meeting the challenge of saving the Northern Rockies Bioregion from habitat destruction, and the driving force behind NREPA (the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act).
“We are thrilled to be a stop on Carole King and James Taylor’s Troubadour Reunion tour. To be selected as both a presenter and beneficiary of this concert is a great honor,” said Bill Ryberg, Executive Director of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

Midón studied jazz at the University of Miami and after graduating became a backup singer, working primarily in the Latin-pop world for such artists as Julio and Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Ricky Martin and Alejandro Sanz. In 2002, Midón walked away from his lucrative work as a back-up singer to pursue a career as a solo artist. Since striking out on his own Midón has produced three solo albums and received accolades for his music’s heady fusion of old-school soul, Latin, jazz and timeless singer/songwriter folk-pop.

The challenges of balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns. The Greely Expedition December 15, 2011
On August 1, 1884, a rescue vessel pulled into the harbor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, carrying First Lieutenant Adolphus Greely and the five other remaining survivors of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition. Three years earlier, 25 men had set sail for the far North, where they planned to collect a wealth of scientific data about the Arctic—a vast area of the world’s surface that had been described as a “sheer blank.” Greely and his men completed that task, only to be abandoned in one of the harshest environments on Earth. The Greely Expedition reveals how poor planning, personality clashes, questionable decisions and pure bad luck conspired to turn a noble scientific mission into a human tragedy.

Late at night, deep in the woods of Washington State, Tod Limberg recorded an eerie howl on his camcorder. He thinks it might be the legendary Bigfoot. Is it? Filmmaker David Thayer records his journey across the American West to find out from several experts if the recording and the elusive ape man are real. Along the way he meets a Bigfoot entrepreneur who claims he will capture Bigfoot “within the next 48 hours,” the Indiana Jones of Idaho who leads viewers into The Cave of Bigfoot, a man who has created a 20-acre trap for the beast and another man who has photographs of the “Invisible Bigfoot.” It is a fascinating and occasionally hysterical look at an enduring American legend.
