Sam Lardner & Barcelona
as part of the multidisciplinary project Water
Friday, October 29, 6:30pm
NexStage Theatre, Ketchum
$20 / $30 nonmembers

Sam Lardner’s music represents everything a cross-cultural artistic experience should be: people from different traditions meeting in a place where everyone shines brighter. A long-time resident of Spain, Lardner has performed with his flamenco fusion band throughout Europe and the United States, where he is a regular at folk and world music festivals. Joining him on this tour are Spanish Top-40 artist Pedro Hermosilla, Spanish keyboard and synthesizer virtuoso Marcel Botella and American world music artist Annie Wenz. Lardner’s latest trips to the United States have included headline performances at the famous Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas as well as International Spotlight Artist performances at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in upstate New York.

Residency:
In conjunction with the multidisciplinary project Water, Sam Lardner will bring his Oceans are Talking project into our local schools. Oceans are Talking is a musical call to action to get kids excited about saving our seas. It’s a way to teach kids ages 5–13 and their families about the most critical issues facing the world’s oceans. It’s all happening thanks to The Ocean Foundation in Washington, D.C., which will send a CD to every school child who will see the performance. Lardner will visit three local schools while here.

Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Crystal Monee Hall grew up singing in the church choir and watching her mother sing on Sundays. This influenced her to become involved in music, and her starring roles in musical theater in high school led to directing her college’s gospel choir, where she began playing piano and writing music. From there she went on to perform with Disney Entertainment and with the Tony Award winning musical Rent as the soloist on the song “Seasons of Love.” Don’t miss this new and unique talent.

"What can I say about Crystal Monee Hall? She smoothly combines the sounds of folk, gospel, jazz and blues. When I first heard [her song] “Stay,” I was moved beyond words. I could feel her every desire. Crystal is a singer/songwriter to watch out for. Truly gifted and inspiring." —Michael McElroy, Grammy Nominated Musician

Raul Midón
Friday, December 3, 6:30pm
Sun Valley Opera House, Sun Valley
$20 / $30 nonmembers
New York-based vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Raul Midón has always experienced the world differently than most. Born prematurely in a rural hospital in New Mexico, he and his twin brother, Marco, were accidentally blinded as infants after spending time in an incubator without eye protection. Midón followed a musical path inspired by his father, a professional Argentine folkloric dancer. Midón studied jazz at the University of Miami and after graduating became a backup singer, working primarily in the Latin-pop world for such artists as Julio and Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Ricky Martin and Alejandro Sanz. In 2002, Midón walked away from his lucrative work as a back-up singer to pursue a career as a solo artist. Since striking out on his own Midón has produced three solo albums and received accolades for his music’s heady fusion of old-school soul, Latin, jazz and timeless singer/songwriter folk-pop.

On Ensemble
Friday, January 21, 6:30pm
Church of the Big Wood, Ketchum
$20 / $30 nonmembers
On Ensemble (pronounced “Ohn”) takes the ancient instruments of taiko into new realms. Infusing the powerful rhythms of ensemble Japanese drumming with elements of hip-hop, rock and electronica, On Ensemble’s unique sound has been praised as “completely original and brilliantly conceived.” On Ensemble’s four members—Masato Baba, Kristofer Bergstrom, Shoji Kameda and Kelvin Underwood—are individually recognized as leading artists in their field and sought after as teachers, workshop leaders, composers and performers. As On Ensemble they combine their study and deep appreciation of tradition with equally formative experiences as DJs, electronic music producers, jazz drummers and rock bassists to create a repertoire of groundbreaking music.

See On Ensemble

RESIDENCY
While in the Wood River Valley, On Ensemble will present three interactive demonstrations that lead students through the history of Japanese drums, from the instruments’ ancient origins to modern musical uses. Each presentation explores percussion, Japanese culture and musical concepts, and culminates in students joining the artists to try the large drums. A fourth presentation will be to the entire Wood River High School in conjunction with Footlight Dance, whose director, Hilarie Neely, has choreographed a piece to perform with On Ensemble. The live performance/collaboration between the dancers and musicians will be an incredible experience.

This progam is made possible with support from the Western States Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Sweet Plantain
Friday, March 4, 6:30pm
Sun Valley Opera House, Sun Valley
$20 / $30 nonmembers
Back for an encore performance in the Wood River Valley, last season’s audience favorite, Sweet Plantain, is a string quartet that specializes in genre-blurring, original compositions and arrangements as well as contemporary works by Latin American composers. Its unique style fuses Latin, classical, jazz and improvisational forms.  The group’s mission is to give voice to a contemporary, urban, Latino sound, and much of the group’s repertoire is rooted in improvisation. The art of improvisation, once an integral part of western classical music, has all but been abandoned in the training of classical artists, although it occupies an important role in nearly every other musical genre. Sweet Plantain works to weave the possibilities of improvisation into classical music by arranging existing pieces and writing original compositions that contain improvised sections. The group also makes use of extended percussive techniques; some of them original creations, to best achieve and showcase the rhythmic vitality characteristic of Latin music.

Residency
Sweet Plantain was not just a hit last year in concert—the group made a profound impact on local students. We’ve never seen so many kids so fired up to discuss music with our visiting performers. This year, Sweet Plantain is sending music to the schools for students to practice before the band members come to work in the classroom. That will be a part of the evening’s live performance, giving our local students the very rare opportunity to perform with professional musicians in a concert setting

With subtle rhythmic intensity in voice and song, Jose Conde takes his Cuban roots and grafts them onto a dizzying range of Afro-Latin styles, from Puerto Rican bomba to Haitian compas to New Orleans swamp-funk, for a nonstop blend of party-stoking grooves. Conde and his New York–based Nu Latin Groove band funkify Afro-Cuban music with global perspective and groove. ZAP MAMA

The group Zap Mama defies easy categorization. A blend of world music, fusion, African, a capella, soul, hip-hop and dance music, Zap Mama draws you in and gets you on your feet. Marie Daulne, the founder and lead singer of Zap Mama, has lived a life that rivals Homer’s in the Odyssey. Born in the Congo but raised in Belgium, Marie stands with one foot firmly planted in tradition and the other in the progressive sounds and sensibilities of a new century, and she consistently merges the two with an effortless grace that never fails to mesmerize.

Over the years, Zap Mama has morphed from an a cappella quintet into the creative vision of one woman surrounded by talent from nearly every corner of the musical landscape. In the process, Marie Daulne has toured the globe in support of her music, with legendary performances at the Montreux and New Orleans jazz festivals, the UK’s Glastonbury Festival, the WOMAD festivals in Adelaide and Singapore, Coachella Festival, Austin C ity Limits, Roskilde, and the Blue Note Festival in Tokyo.

CAROLE KING JAMES TAYLOR TROUBADOUR REUNION TOUR
Special Date Added in Sun Valley, Idaho - SOLD OUT
Performance to Benefit Sun Valley Center and Alliance for the Wild Rockies

Monday, July 12, 7:30pm
River Run Lodge, Ketchum

A special performance has been added to the Carole King and James Taylor Troubadour Reunion tour at 7:30 pm on July 12, 2010 at River Run in Sun Valley, benefitting The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and the Alliance for the Wild Rockies.

The genesis of this once-in-a-lifetime reunion tour were 6 performances by King and Taylor in 2007 celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Los Angeles’ famed Troubadour nightclub. At that club some 40 years ago, Taylor urged King to emerge as an artist from behind her piano, a seminal moment in the history of these Pop Singer-Songwriter icons.

An ardent advocate for educational and environmental issues, King, a long-time resident of Idaho’s Sawtooth Valley, selected The Sun Valley Center for the Arts, a non-profit educational arts organization whose mission is to stimulate and provoke the imagination through excellence in diverse arts programs; and the Alliance for the Wild Rockies, a volunteer organization meeting the challenge of saving the Northern Rockies Bioregion from habitat destruction, and the driving force behind NREPA (the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act).

“We are thrilled to be a stop on Carole King and James Taylor’s Troubadour Reunion tour. To be selected as both a presenter and beneficiary of this concert is a great honor,” said Bill Ryberg, Executive Director of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.

One of the biggest Bollywood hits of all time,
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is also the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema (over 700 weeks). It tells the story of a romance between Raj and Simran, both second generation Indians living in England, with deep Indian values. Simran's arranged marriage plans are put in turmoil when she falls in love with Raj on a trip to Europe with friends. The film's soundtrack is wildly popular, as are its scenes of lavish wedding preparations. Don't miss your chance to see a Bollywood film on the big screen, in the luxurious comfort of the Liberty Theatre!

The Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska is home to the Kvichak and Nushagak Rivers, the two most prolific sockeye salmon runs left in the world. It is also home to the second largest deposit of copper, gold and molybdenum ever discovered. Two mining companies have proposed an open-pit and underground mine at the headwaters of the two rivers. Red Gold, an award-winning documentary, introduces viewers to the region and gives those who live in and love the area the opportunity to tell the story of how this mine would affect their lives.

Kandahar
March 16, 2005
Directed by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 2001
Filmed on the border of Iran and Afghanistan, Kandahar is a politically urgent story of a young female journalist named Nafas who must return to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan to rescue her sister. The sister, distraught over the ever-present persecution, has written to Nafas vowing that she will commit suicide by the next solar eclipse. This austere and fascinating movie includes a number of seemingly bizarre and random episodes which combine to paint a picture of the reality of life in this unreal world. Kandahar has won awards at a number of international film festivals including 2001 Cannes Film Festival, Fellini Unesco Award in 2001, and the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival.

Hollywood Harems
March 23, 2005
Directed by Tania Kamal-Eldin, 1999
A half-hour documentary that takes critical aim at Hollywood's abiding fascination with all things Eastern. Juxtaposing film clips from the 20s through the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Hollywood Harems explores the organization of gender, race and sexuality in Hollywood's portrayal of the exotic East and the indiscriminate fusion of things Arab, Persian, Chinese and Indian. We see how these Technicolor fantasies have worked to shape and reinforce derogative assumptions about peoples of the East.

Afghanistan Unveiled
March 23, 2005
by Brigitte Brault and Aina Women Filming Group, 2003
Filmed by the first-ever team of women journalists trained in Afghanistan, this rare and uncompromising film explores the effects of the Taliban's repressive rule and the recent U.S. military campaign. The filmmakers present Hazara women who have been left to live in caves to fend for themselves. They also find moving examples of hope and discovery. Women Who Make Movies says " Unveiled is a revelatory and profound reminder of the independent media's power to bear witness and reveal truth." The film was recently aired in November by PBS and has been screened at independent film festivals throughout the world.
