Every year the Center hosts 2 in-service days for full time Blaine County teachers. These in-service days are free of charge to the teachers and focus on ways of bringing themes explored in The Center's multidisciplinary projects into the curriculum. Please check with Britt Udesen, Director of Education and Humanities for more information about upcoming teacher in-service programs for Fall of 2008.

Facing American History through the Lens of Race and Membershipwith Dr. Mary Johnson, Senior Historian, Facing History and Ourselves
October 20 and 21, 8:30am-4:30pm
Free for teachers
In this two-day workshop we will explore how beliefs about race have shaped--and challenged--American's identity as a land of "freedom and opportunity." We'll look at significant events and movements in American history--slavery, immigration, the eugenics movement, the civil rights movement--and will consider legacies of each in American society today.
- How was a slave-owning society able to articulate lasting ideals of liberty and freedom?
- How has immigration both stretched and constricted the boundaries of membership in American society?
- How did the racial ideas of the American eugenics movement impact public policy?
- How did the civil rights movement redefine notions of American citizenship?
Ultimately, this journey will bring participants back to the present. Examining American history through the lens of race and membership empowers us and our students to value how our choices shape contemporary America. Participants will receive a resource book and membership in the Facing History and Ourselves Teacher Network. Please register for the workshop online:

The Center offers interactive gallery tours for students of all ages. Teachers are invited to schedule visits for their classes. While here, students will have the opportunity to discuss the current artwork on display, try their hand at the media and processes exhibited and explore issues presented in the exhibition. During the 2007-2008 school year, students from every school and every grade have toured the gallery. Please contact
