Create a decorative handmade book using your own italic letters! This class will begin with an introduction to the art of italic calligraphy. Beginning with a monoline letterform, students will learn structure and stroke sequence. Advancing to the edged pen, participants will then experience the characteristic thick and thin style of italic lettering. In addition, participants will create a decorative handmade book using colorful, painted paste papers that they will design. Learn about paper grain, folding, tearing, cutting, page layout and design, and sewn and glued bindings. Students can write simple quotations in their books using their italic letterforms or add other embellishments. The completed book could be a memorable gift or a valued personal keepsake. |

This digital workshop will take you from the basics of exposure, manipulation of depth of field and shutter speed to the ultimate goal of creating compelling photographs with your digital camera. We will focus not only on the technical aspects of photography, but also take the time to look more closely at our surroundings and to translate light into new and interesting images. The instructor will cover all the necessary ingredients for making great photographs—metering, ISO, lens choice and composition—while strengthening your individual skills. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to control how motion and depth of field affect your photographs and know how to use your camera in manual mode. This workshop will inform, inspire and challenge you to make interesting images in your everyday surroundings. All students are required to have a SLR digital camera.

Encaustic Painting with Eve-Marie Bergren

Encaustic painting is a centuries old technique combining beeswax, resin and pigment to yield incredibly sumptuous results on a variety of different surfaces. In this two day introductory level class, Bergren will touch on the foundations of encaustic painting. Students will be working on old books in conjunction with wood substrates. Students will learn how to duplicate imagery into the surface of the wax, collage imagery and photography in conjunction with text and writing. A variety of papers and imagery will be provided but all participants are encouraged to bring their own. The instructor will bring a box of old books that participants can work on, tear up, cut out sections and pour wax into.... the possibilities are endless! All levels of experience are welcome.

Encaustic Books with Eve-Marie Bergren

This one-day extension of the two day encaustic course will give participants the opportunity to work with the paper and wax properties of encaustic. Bergren will demonstrate how encaustic can be used in a bookmaking capacity on actual structures. Students will learn how to make 2 or 3 mini single sheet folding books where text and imagery transfer techniques will be applied. It is recommended, but not required, that participants take the two day course before this class, as they will have a better understanding of wax and the possibilities inherent in the encaustic medium.

This week-long studio workshop offers students a chance to explore the varied qualities of oil paint with respected painter Connie Borup. Working from photographs, students will learn indirect painting techniques such as underpainting, glazing, stenciling, washing and scumbling. Each student is encouraged to develop his or her personal style and be open to new discoveries. Connie offers a wealth of experience from over thirty years of teaching, including 11 years at the University of Utah, and now limits herself to an annual workshop in France and in Sun Valley. She exhibits her work locally at the Gail Severn Gallery.

Chain Making with Alison B. Antelman

Chains are one of the foundations of fine art jewelry in modern and ancient times. Students will gain an appreciation of jewelry creation by making their own chains. Learn to use a jeweler’s saw, coil and cut jump rings and complete a Byzantine bracelet. We will make samples of different patterns and variations of chains as well as explore woven chains. Students will leave the class wearing one of their own sterling silver handmade bracelets along with samples, tools and knowledge to further explore chains on their own. Alison exhibits and sells her work in galleries and at craft shows nationally. She has taught at the Richmond Art Center, Mendocino Art Center, Sun Valley Center for the Arts and through the Southern California Metals Guild at UCSD.

Discover the possibilities of printmaking with artist Nick Wroblewski. This class will offer an introduction as well as intermediate techniques for creating a multicolor woodblock print. This class will offer an introduction to the basics of creating a multicolor woodblock print. Students will be shown techniques for transfer, carving, reduction, and multiple block methods. This class will help simplify the seemingly complicated world of layers, woodcarving, reversed imagery, registration and printing. Embark on the adventurous process of creating a unique, colorful image through woodcarving! Nick Wroblewski is a Minneapolis based printmaker specializing in hand-cut wood block prints. He studied art at Bennington College in Vermont and later developed his technique of relief printmaking. He makes "reduction" prints, carving a single block of wood differently for each color that is printed. This is a traditional method of creating a multi-colored print from one block. His imagery is derived from the natural world as experienced through various traveling experiences. Nick works from his studio in Minneapolis. Try something new as you explore various aspects of attaching, transferring, and gluing objects and images to various surfaces. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials including water-based paint to create their own visual narratives. An instructor at the San Francisco Art Institute for 18 years, Inez Storer is an accomplished teacher and artist whose work is widely exhibited and collected. Inez Storer was born in 1933 in Santa Monica, California. She studied at the Art Center in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Art Institute, the University of California at Berkeley, and the San Francisco College for Women, ultimately receiving her B.A. from Dominican University in San Rafael, California (1970). She received her M.A. from San Francisco State University (1971). Storer's work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions consistently thorough the United States at institutions such as the Reno Museum of Art, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Monterey Museum of Art, the Fresno Art Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Missoula Museum of Art, Montana, and The National Museum of Jewish History, Philadelphia. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions throughout the country. Storer has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute (1981 - 1999), Sonoma State University (1976 - 1988), San Francisco State University (1970 - 1973), and the College of Marin (1968 - 1979). She has received numerous grants and awards, including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 1999, and has worked twice as a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome (1997, 1996). Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Oakland Museum of California, the Lannan Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, the San Jose Museum of Art, and the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University. Storer lives in Inverness, California and maintains a studio in Point Reyes Station, California. You'll learn the history of encaustic technique, basic safety concerns and studio set-up. Demonstrations will include surface preparation, basic wax painting, mastering the use of cold and hot applications, transferring images, creating glassy and textured surfaces and adding collage elements with paper and assemblage. No previous artistic experience necessary! Eve-Marie Bergren grew up in California's Bay Area, earned her bachelor's degree in art from Whitman College in 1995 and a master's degree in visual art from Vermont College in 2001. It was at Vermont College that Bergren began painting with encaustics. After training with R and F Handmade Paints in New York, Bergren began traveling the country leading encaustic workshops. She also teaches drawing at Boise State University. Her work has been exhibited widely in Idaho including Ochi Fine Art, Boise Art Museum, Albertson College of Idaho, Boise State University, Pritchard Gallery at University of Idaho in Moscow and Carr Gallery of Art in Idaho Falls.
