Show Information: The Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival is ranked among the top 100 best art and craft shows in the country by the Art Fair Source Book. The Larry Harris List of the Nation’s Best Art Festivals ranks the Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival among the top 20 in the Pacific Northwest and California. Sales for the 2011 show, which included 130 artists, were approximately $501,000 based on taxes collected by the City of Ketchum. Admission is free; entertainment and educational programs are scheduled throughout the weekend. Atkinson Park is a level, grassy field surrounded by high alpine mountains. The Festival is sponsored by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and more information is available at www.sunvalleycenter.org. Rules & Eligibility:
Artists in all fine art and fine craft disciplines are welcome to apply. Artists agree to be present during all show hours, all three days, and will show only their own work made by their own hands in only the category in which they are accepted.
Artists displaying work in categories other than the one for which they were accepted will be asked to remove the unaccepted work or to leave the Festival.
Exhibited work should not be older than five years unless prior permission has been received from the Director and should all be for sale.
No commercial agents, dealers or manufacturers may enter. Kits, tumbled stones, embellished objects, manufactured objects, imported objects, mass-produced goods, exhibitor posters, edible items, candles and personal care items are unacceptable for sale during the Festival.
Offset printed reproductions may not make up more than 20% of a booth and must be labeled as such with a clear definition of the reproduction process displayed and available for the general public. Any artist displaying reproductions as their primary item for sale will be asked to remove reproductions or to leave the Festival.
All artists must disclose materials and processes used in on-site signage. A standardized format for artists’ signage can be found at www.naia-artists.org. If two or more persons collaborate to produce original work, all must be identified on the application.
No more than one assistant may be in the booth with an artist at any time.
No raffles of an artist’s work are allowed.
Categories:
You may choose only one category per application. Artists are welcome to apply in multiple categories, but must submit separate applications for each category. While a balanced show that showcases fine art and diversity of media is a principal objective, the Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival does not establish a quota in any category. IF COMPUTER MANIPULATION IS USED IN THE CREATION OF WORK, IT MUST BE DIVULGED IN THE “DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE” SECTION OF YOUR APPLICATION- FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.
Please review category definitions carefully.
CERAMICS: All original clay and porcelain work other than jewelry. No machine made or mass produced work is permitted. If multiple pieces of the same design are displayed, each piece must be signed. Painted greenware is not eligible.
DRAWING: Works created using dry media including chalk, charcoal, pastels, pencil, wax crayons, etc. or from fluid medium of inks and washes applied by pen or brush.
FIBER: Includes basketry, weaving, paper-making, leather and fine wearables. No machine tooling, machine screened patterns or miscellaneous forms of mass production are permitted. All factory produced non-wearable items, regardless of additional modification or enhancement by the artists, are prohibited.
GLASS: Works that have been crafted via glass blowing, molding, or casting, as well as works that have been kiln-formed. Works may be etched or engraved. Glass works may be functional or purely decorative in design. No form of mass production is permitted.
JEWELRY: All jewelry, whether the work is produced from metal, glass, clay, fiber, paper, plastic or other materials. No commercial casts, molds, mass production, or production studio work allowed.
METALWORK: Functional, non-sculptural metal work. All sculptural work should be submitted in the sculpture category.
MIXED MEDIA: Includes 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional work that incorporates more than one type of material in their production.
PAINTING: Oil, acrylic, watercolor, tempera, etc.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Photographic prints made from artist’s original negative that have been processed by the artist or under his/her direct supervision. Photographers are required to disclose their creative process and printing process. USE OF COMPUTER MANIPULATION MUST BE DIVULGED IN APPLICATION. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.
PRINTMAKING: Printed works for which the artist hand-manipulated the plates, stones, or screens. Prints must be signed and numbered as a limited edition. Printmakers are required to disclose their creative and printing processes.
SCULPTURE: 3-dimensional original work done in any medium.
WOODWORK: Original hand-tooled, machine worked, turned or carved.
Jury Process:
IMAGES: Six images must be submitted. Five images should feature individual pieces that accurately represent the body of work to be exhibited; work shown in the images must be representative of current work, and no more than five years old. One booth shot is mandatory and must be representative of presentation and work to be displayed. Booth image will be used to determine scale of work, balance and overall presentation. All images are juried anonymously so please be sure your name (or business name) does not appear anywhere in the image or in the image title.
Each set of six images submitted by an artist is viewed as a group. Each group of images is viewed by category in the order submitted to ZAPP.
SCORING: Approximately 130 artists will exhibit in the 2012 show. The 2011 award winners in each category are invited to exhibit, with the remaining slots filled through a competitive jury process.
Projected images are reviewed by the panel in a blind jury process with multiple rounds. To make the process as fair as possible, the identities of artists are not disclosed to jurors. ALL IMAGES MUST BE ANONYMOUS AND CANNOT INCLUDE IDENTIFYING MARKINGS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO SIGNATURES, NAME STAMPS, COMPANY NAMES, OR PHOTOS OF THE ARTIST.
During the jury, images are projected simultaneously onto a large screen, 3 across from left to right starting with #1. The description of materials and technique submitted in each artist’s application is read aloud for the jurors and is an important tool for sharing unique aspects of the pieces represented and creative process.
An overall score is awarded on a scale of 1-5 for quality, creativity, originality and craftsmanship. Prior to scoring each category, jurors review all of the applicant's images within the category. During this time a member of the jury who is an expert or professional in the related field may be asked questions about certain techniques related to said category by the rest of the jury. The second round is viewed in silence and each juror assigns each artist an overall score. Scores are then totaled for one cumulative score per artist with 35 being the highest possible score. Jurors are instructed to score independently and they do not discuss their scores with other jurors during the scoring process.
LOCAL ARTISTS: All local artists, those living in Blaine County (as full time residents), will automatically receive one point before jurying to encourage participation and ensure a positive environment for local artists.
THE JURY: The jury consists of a panel of 7 professional artists and collectors. The majority of the panel rotates on a yearly basis to ensure objectivity. The same jurors who judge the festival participants are also asked to judge Best of Show and Best of Category Awards during the Festival. Jurors are not compensated for their time financially or otherwise.
JURY EXEMPTIONS: The Best of Show, Best of Category and People's Choice award winners from the previous year are exempt from the jury process. The Best of Show winner may participate as a jury member for the following year. The Director has final discretion on accepted artists.

Our juried festival is held in Atkinson Park, adjacent to Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum ( Festival Location Map). This three-day outdoor exhibition of 130 artists from around the country features a wide range of unique handmade fine arts and crafts including painting, photography, fiber, ceramic, metal, jewelry and woodwork. Ranked as one of the best outdoor juried festivals in the nation, the Festival is a tremendous opportunity for Wood River Valley residents and visitors to meet artists and get a sense of what's happening in the world of arts and crafts-and maybe even buy some art! This popular community event includes artists' demonstrations, live music and a children's activity area.
Did You Know? The Sun Valley Center for the Arts is the sponsor of the Festival and is the Wood River Valley’s oldest non-profit educational arts organization. Founded in 1971, the Center’s mission is to stimulate and provoke the imagination while opening hearts and minds through diverse arts programs. The Center has three major programming areas:
• Visual Arts programs range widely in scope, structure and subject including exhibitions of work by nationally recognized contemporary artists and museum-quality educational exhibitions. • The Performing Arts Department features music, dance and film. • Our Education and Humanities Department offers art classes for adults and kids as well as lectures on various topics.
Several times a year, the departments collaborate on multidisciplinary projects that explore a theme or concept in depth. All programs have a strong educational focus, including lectures, readings, films, free gallery admission, concerts and school programs for kids as well as in-school music residencies. The Center collaborates with other cultural non-profits and local school teachers to develop programs that provide access to cultural experiences for students. Scholarships and work-study opportunities are offered for all Center events.
Sun Valley Center programs are supported by the Engl Trust, the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, private foundations, proceeds from the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Wine Auction, grants, donations and membership dues.
