Break the “Pre” off the Dictable: A Workshop for Fiction Writers with Anthony Doerr June 13 - 17, 2011 9am - 12pm
“Habits are cobwebs at first, cables at last,” goes an old Chinese proverb, and in this workshop we’ll look at ways we can sever the cables of our habitual ways of reading, writing and thinking. How can we become less predictable, more aware and more original writers? We’ll talk about clichés, both at the sentence and structural levels, we’ll read some famous stories and some of your stories, too, and we’ll try to explore ways that good writing can help us avoid sleepwalking through life.
Participants should be prepared to share up to 15 pages of fiction with Anthony and the other writers in the workshop. Double-space your manuscript, number your pages, use a 12-pt. font, and e-mail it to The Center. That way we'll have time to read each other's work before we meet. Send work you’re excited about and want feedback on. You can choose to submit an excerpt from a novel, a complete short story or a series of several shorter pieces. If you choose to share a novel excerpt, please include a brief statement to offer an idea of the overall narrative and where your chapter fits into it. Besides reading each other's work, we’ll read a few published stories (handouts provided) and have lots of fun.

Workshop leader, Steve Almond, is the author of the story collections My Life in Heavy Metal and The Evil B.B. Chow, the novel Which Brings Me to You, and the non-fiction books Candy Freaks and (Not That You Asked). His Latest book is Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life and was just released.

The Novel: A Discussion of Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom with Ryan Waterfield Mon, September 26, 2011, 6pm - 8:30pm The Center, Hailey
“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” -- Me and Bobby Magee, written by Kris Kristofferson, performed by Janis Joplin
In choosing to title his most recent novel with the weight of the word freedom, Jonathan Franzen, sets his sights quite high and the expectations of the readers follow. Critics differ on the overall outcome of the novel, and some take issue with Franzen’s grandiose ambitions. Participants in this class will consider the different manifestations of freedom in the world that Franzen constructs and what the implications are as the characters pursue various avenues leading towards freedom. We will also consider why the novel as an art form is an effective way to unpack all of these complexities. Ultimately, we will pursue the Bobby Magee question – Is freedom just another word for nothing left to lose?
In order to understand the world Franzen has constructed in context, we will need to consider the contemporary world in which the novel is set. To prepare for this seminar, please keep a reader’s journal centering on the theme of “freedom” that includes related quotes / concepts from the novel Freedom, cultural tidbits (song lyrics, commercials, newspaper articles, viral videos, email jokes etc.) and quotes from other novels, books, articles, poems, and visual images that, to you, capture the essence of freedom. Just as in Franzen’s novel, the picture we’ll get from these personal catalogues will be complex, contradictory, and ripe for discussion.
